DL I Summer 2008*

During the summer of 2008, St. Paul High School teachers participated in the district's 1st High School Disciplinary Literacy Training. Every school sent representatives to Gordon Parks Alternative High School for the week-long training in August. During the school year, coaches have been working with the participating teachers in their classrooms. Five after-school study sessions support the summer trainings with opportunities for studying instruction across schools in the district through viewing and discussing video clips of classrooms and studying student work.

Disciplinary Literacy Concepts:

Quotes from Middle School Model Classrooms:

"The most valuable experience was the chance to spend time planning how the

unit would look: what activities, skills, questions, etc. we would focus

on. Having that coach as a resource to suggest materials and how to use

them was also good."

"I plan to continue incorporating the guiding questions. I would also like

to eventually have my students help me to create driving questions.

Discussion techniques, especially using Accountable Talk starters is

another area I want to continue."

"I learned that I  often assume students are familiar with things that they

are not familiar with. I learned that I need to provide more scaffolding in

many lessons. What I think are clear expectations for students often are not."
